Usually it takes 2-3 weeks to receive the receipt numbers. My lawyer sent my file on 06/06/2007 which should have reached USCIS on 06/07/2007. I am not expecting a receipt number before third week of June. I will post here when I receive my receipt.

I am a member of Immigration Voice (www.immigrationvoice.org). Immigration Voice represents the interest of 500,000 legal skilled immigrants in the United States on the path to green cards who have been stuck in enormous backlogs and delays in immigration process.
The career growth, job mobility and quality of life of a half a million legal skilled immigrants is subverted by the bill in its current form.
Specifically, the restrictions on employment mobility of current applicants affected by this bill, limit improvements in all wage rates. This is because when the market for highly skilled staff improves (as it is doing today), we have significant bureaucratic barriers placed that prevent us from changing jobs. This creates a mis-allocation of scarce talent and limits the growth of the high tech industry as a whole.
The permanent residency process currently takes a great many years, but technologies change fast. Staying in the same job can make a tech career stagnant. Few Americans in the technology field are willing to stay in the same position within their current company for that many years. So, Again, this limits growth in the technology industry because scarce skills are being miss-allocated.
It is not just about changing jobs: I also get requests from friends that want me to improve their website or even join a start-up. They are dumbfounded when I tell them I may not because it is illegal for me to do so. Nor may I volunteer my time. Nor may I start my own company because I may not work for myself. The economic cost of a half-million highly skilled people not being able to start a business must be staggering.
Personally, since moving to the "land of the free", I find it ironic that I lost my economic freedom. It is also heartbreaking to see the rug pulled out from beneath us when we've been such law-abiding and dedicated participants in the current system all these years. In terms of years, in terms of opportunity lost, and in terms of money wasted on lawyers, we humbly request an equitable solution for all skilled, law-abiding immigrants.
Here are some specific reasons why the current CIR bill fails us, and fails the US economy. Also suggestions on improvements that can be made:
1. Section 501(b) reduces the number of green cards to legal skilled immigrants from the current 140,000/year to 90,000/year and diverts the major portion of those green cards to future low-skills guest workers under the Y visa program. Instead of increasing that number to reduce the backlogs this section take a step backwards and would exacerbate the backlogs. On the other hand, 503(f)(2) of this act would allocate an estimated 11 million green cards over a time frame of 5 years – 2.2 million a year – to undocumented immigrants. Immigration Voice requests congress to treat legal skilled immigrants at parity with undocumented immigrants and increase the number of green cards to at least 250,000 for 5 years for currently backlogged applicants defined under Sec. 502(d)(2) in order to reduce to current backlog before the untested points based merit system is functional.
2. Immigration Voice requests congress to waive per-country ceilings on backlogged petitions to be processed under Sec. 502(d)(2) in order to make the backlog reduction more efficient. The bill provides a very similar waiver from per-country ceilings to family based pending petitions in section 508(b).
3. Immigration Voice requests congress to allow legal skilled immigrants to file for adjustment of status for those applicants who have been certified by DOL to be doing jobs no US citizen is willing, qualified or able to do. This would be at parity with provisions for undocumented immigrants who would qualify for instant work permit (probationary card) that allows them to work without employer sponsor and without department of labor’s certification simply by registering.
We at Immigration Voice strongly opposes the bill S 1348 in its current form and requests congress to amend this bill and treat the legal skilled immigrants at parity with undocumented immigrants, future guest-workers and pending family-based applicants.

All the posts above are good coping measures, and some are used to actually deal with depressive symptoms. However they have missed the MOST important one! You used the term clinical depression. Please if you truly feel that way seek help, and seek it now, talk to your doctor or to a councilor. Though I won't go into details, I am speaking from personal experience. Sometimes things build up so much that we slip into such a state where we go beyond sadness and frustration and move to true depression.
From a site on depression: Depression is a disorder that affects your thoughts, moods, feelings, behavior and even your physical health. People used to think it was "all in your head" and that if you really tried, you could "snap out of it" or just "get over it." But doctors now know that depression is not a weakness, and it's not something you can treat on your own. Depression is a medical disorder with a biological and chemical basis.
Sometimes a stressful life event triggers depression. Other times depression seems to occur spontaneously with no identifiable specific cause. Depression is much more than grieving or a bout of the blues.
Depression, true clinical depression, is nothing you can cure with a trip to somewhere else, or having people point out to you how much better you are off than this person or that one. I am linking one of many sites that are out there, please read it and if you really do have the symptoms do what it suggests. Or Google "Clinical Depression" (beware of sites trying to sell drugs, usually easy to tell as they tend to recommend their drug as the only solutions.):

Hi guys,
it is very frustrating that most of the guys whi have filed between July 2nd -July 16 have been waiting either close to 90 or more than 90 days, just for the sake of the DAMN receipt notices.
I have been very patiently waiting for the past 84 days (as i filed mine on July16th) and I see that even folks who filed just during the Aug 10th period are also getting their notices and getting their FP done.
DAMN with USCIS sorting order, as those morons could not even implement a FIFO manner, if they had followed, we would have had our receipts long back.
Once again, HELL with these stupid receipting process.
Hope atleast some of you can understand the pain in the whole friggin process.

Any time your job responsibilities change on paper, that could be a risky proposition, I think. An architect's role is a lot different from that of a programmer analyst. So unless the original job description for programmer analyst is too broad in its wording, you might be in for trouble.

Adding dependents/derivative is based on primary�s PD and app status.
Challenge me with a scenario that will have an issue. If someone doesn�t have H4 they will be affected anyways. They will not have additional impact due to this.
Please read INA, I485 application and current VB.
I personally believe none will be affected and left too behind (yes, they will be delayed a bit, they will have AP/EAD to hold on to).
(1) I am on H1b and wife on H4 . I have PD of Jan 2008. Now In july 2009 VB shows Eb2 india with PD of Mar 2008 and F2A with Jan 2005. I will be able to file for 485 will my wife can file 485 ?
(2) If she cannot file and what if my company insist me to be on EAD and resufe to extend my H1b. What will be status of my wife.. ( Assuming she didnot file AOS while I did ).
(3) What will be her category or status if I am lucky and get GC in 2 months since my date become current ?

We too got the magic emails saying our 485 has been approved. It was indeed a long journey that started back in 2000. Happy that it all ended well. My priority date is Dec 2005. I did create a service request early August which helped a lot. All the best to the rest of the guys who are waiting for the approval emails.

Provided you bypass those apps that consulting companies line up at the start of the year. This is what Microsoft/Intel etc are trying to counter. They are not getting enough of the H1Bs themselves.

Somehow I dont see how an increase in the H1 quota can negatively affect us EB folk. All I am saying is, let us not totally oppose the H1B increases just because most of us on here already have one. Half of the spouses on here can start working the minute the H1B quota is increased. I keep trying to convince.."Did i realy read that posting or was it just a bad dream"..unfortunalty its not a dream..!!!
Do get it checked from well know doctors. Here is a youtube version of comenecement speach given by Steve Jobs. Even he was diagnized with cancer and he spent whole day thinking of his resposibality. But that evening the doctors realzied it was curable cancer and were in tears ..!!!
